4 Tips for Taking Care of Your Home's Garage Doors
In order for your garage door to protect your home, you need to help protect your garage door. The best way to do this is to practice regular maintenance on your residential garage door. In the long run, this will save you money on serious repairs and will prolong the need for a replacement garage door.
Consider these four tips for taking care of your home's garage doors.
- Keep It Clean: Clean your garage door of dirt and debris. When leaves, sticks, and dirt fall into the hinges of your garage door, they can get into the tracks and cause door jams. If you have an electrical garage door opener, then debris can further complicate things by penetrating your electronics or interfering with the safety lasers beneath your overhead door.
- Battle the Rust: To help avoid rust—which can corrode and prematurely ruin custom garage doors—lubricate the metal joints, tracks, springs, bearings, and hinges with WD40 or a similar lubricant. In some situations, you can also treat an area that's beginning to rust in order to prevent the damage from worsening.
- Tighten Up the Tracks: Try to tighten your tracks if you notice they have gotten loose. This will prevent your door from hopping off the tracks and making a loud raucous when opening and closing. Usually, you can tighten the tracks with a screwdriver.
- Paint the Exterior: Another way to prevent corrosion and keep your door looking sharp, is to add a fresh coat of paint. Sealing the garage door with paint not only looks good, but also protects the door from weather damage.
